Swiss and EU Nationals Visiting the UK Now Need a UK ETA

From today, 2 April 2025, Swiss nationals and EU citizens residing in Switzerland must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before visiting the United Kingdom. This marks a major change in UK immigration policy, as Swiss and EU nationals—who have until now travelled to the UK visa-free—are now subject to advance screening under the UK’s digital travel permit system. If you are planning a trip to the UK for tourism, business, short-term study, or other permitted short stays, it is now essential that you apply for and receive a UK ETA before you travel.
UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): What Is It and Why Does It Matter?
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital entry permit designed to enhance border security and pre-screen non-visa nationals before they travel to the UK. This system aligns the UK’s border control framework with similar initiatives like the US ESTA and the forthcoming EU ETIAS.
Swiss and EU nationals who previously enjoyed visa-free travel to the UK must now demonstrate they meet the UK’s security and suitability criteria before departure. Without a valid ETA, you will not be allowed to board your flight, train, or ferry to the UK.
Who Needs an ETA to Visit the UK From Switzerland?
From 2 April 2025, the ETA requirement applies to nationals of:
Switzerland and all EU Member States, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.
EEA countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
European microstates: Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City.
If you do not hold UK immigration status—such as settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme—or a UK visa, you must obtain an ETA before travelling to the UK.
When to Apply: UK ETA Application Opening Date for Swiss and EU Nationals
The UK ETA application process opened on 5 March 2025 for Swiss and EU citizens travelling on or after 2 April 2025. It is advisable to apply for your ETA as early as possible to avoid last-minute delays or disruption to your travel plans.
How to Apply for a UK ETA From Switzerland
The ETA application is completed online via the UK ETA mobile app or the official UK Government website. You will need to:
Provide your passport and personal details
Upload a digital passport-style photograph
Answer security and suitability questions
Pay a £10 application fee (increasing to £16 from 9 April 2025)
Most UK ETA applications are processed within three working days, although decisions may take longer in some cases. Travellers should apply well in advance of travel, especially during peak periods.
Important: You must apply using a national passport. Swiss and EU nationals who attempt to apply using another form of identity document will be required to apply for a full UK visa instead.
UK ETA Validity for Swiss and EU Travellers
Once issued, a UK ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first. It allows for multiple entries into the UK, as long as each visit complies with the permitted activities under the UK Visitor Rules.
Why Might a UK ETA Be Refused?
Although most ETA applications will be approved swiftly, some may be refused if the UK Home Office deems that you fail to meet the expanded suitability criteria. Common reasons for ETA refusal include:
Criminal convictions
Previous breaches of UK immigration rules
Providing false or misleading information
Outstanding NHS debts or unpaid litigation costs to the Home Office
Having previously been refused entry or a UK visa
Having had a previous ETA cancelled
These stricter rules reflect the UK’s aim of strengthening border control and preventing abuse of the immigration system. However, refusal of an ETA does not amount to a refusal of entry. You may still be able to visit the UK, but you will need to apply for and be granted a Standard Visitor Visa or other appropriate visa.
If your ETA is refused, professional legal advice is strongly recommended to assess your eligibility for a visa and avoid further complications.
Can You Still Travel to the UK if Your ETA Is Refused?
Yes—but you must apply for and obtain a UK visa instead. Depending on the purpose of your visit, this might be:
A Standard Visitor Visa (for tourism, business, or short-term study)
A Temporary Work – Creative Worker Visa (if coming under that concession)
Visa applications require more extensive documentation and a longer processing period, so early preparation is essential.
A New Era for UK Border Security
The introduction of the ETA system forms part of the UK’s wider plan to digitise its borders and enhance pre-entry screening. While the system offers more control to UK border authorities, it may also give rise to errors or unfair refusals, particularly in complex cases. If you believe that your circumstances might lead to an ETA refusal—or if your application has already been refused—expert legal guidance can help clarify your options.
